This post is about the biography of Desvita Tria, a student of communication studies at the University of Indonesia

Literacy is something that we never realize has an impact on the development of the Indonesian youth community. Although it is not something that concerns our generation, Vita is one of the few that notice this issue. Desvita Tria Ningrum or also known as Vita is currently majoring in communication studies at the University of Indonesia. She was born in Jakarta, December 1st, 2001. Since childhood, Vita doesn’t have a close relationship with her parents, especially because of her father’s job that requires him to move from time to time. She then has to stay with her mother and siblings that have a huge age difference from her.

Her busy life started at junior high school. She was a student at SMPN 2 Depok and she was an independent learner. Family was not the first place to influence her critical behavior because her interests are mostly motivated by the environment at school and outside of school. Graduated from junior high, she proceeds to study at SMAN 1 Depok. In Highschool, she continued her journey and contributing to activities at school or outside of school. At school she was one of the members of the student council, outside of school she also joined some voluntary activities and self-development organizations.

The activities she was involved in and the people she met have increased her awareness of the social and political issues in Indonesia mainly on literacy issues. Her awareness started from the problems she observed throughout high school, even in the environment she was in. Then she acknowledged those concerns and discuss them with the people from the organization outside of school. One of the organizations she mentioned was BecomeMore Indonesia, which is a community for students of high school to develop themselves through conferences, discussions, etc. She explained how her process of learning and the meetings she had with inspiring figures really opens up her mind and sharpen her sensitivity towards the issues in our society.

Her passion for literacy and the issues happening in Indonesia made her realize that as a youth we can actually do something. She recognizes her spirit towards reading and the knowledge she has as the strength to fight those issues. Her idea is to make a platform for people mainly youth to improve their literacy ability. After planning about it for a while, she finally has time to make Binokular.id and providing bite-size literature of book summaries wrapped in a form of podcasts. Her goal is to spread the importance of literacy in our generation and engage people to read. She also explained how Binokular.id as a non-profit organization can benefit the members by training to summarize an entire book to only a 15 minutes podcast as it also requires a good understanding of the book.

As a student who sees this issue as a challenge for the young generation, she believes that we can overcome it by just some simple steps. Start by reading a simple book every day and make it a habit then slowly learn to comprehend the content of the book.
